I initially worked as an accountant but retrained as a Human Resources professional during my time at British Gas. I attended London University Business School, on behalf of British Gas on their executive programme. After this training I became Personnel Services Manager for British Gas, responsible for 11,000 employees. Prior to my work in personnel I worked as a tutor at the British Gas College which I enjoyed greatly.
Subsequently, I was the General Manger for the delivery of services for Wigan, St Helens, Warrington, Widnes and Runcorn, following which I spent two years (on secondment) in London working for British Gas facilitation for privatisation. After my secondment ended I came back to take up the post of Controller of Suppliers (Director of Logistics) from Birmingham to the North of Scotland and spent years working in this large area.
In addition to my day job, I was also undertaking voluntary roles such as, Non-Executive Director of Whiston Hospital for 7 years, followed by 6 years as a Non-Executive Director of Fairfield Hospital. I was also the Project Director that developed Willowbrook Hospice and remained active in that organisation for 25 years. I am also one of two Willowbrook Ambassadors alongside Lady Pilkington.
I have been a trustee with Crossroads Care North West for over 4 years and am Chairman of the Human Resources sub committee.
I am married with one daughter and one grandson.
